Gregory Emfietzis was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. He started his musical life by playing the violin and singing in a children's choir. Later on, he recorded three albums with a heavy metal band as violinist, participated in numerous international festivals, concerts and operas as member of vocal ensembles, while also being involved in projects as composer and multimedia performer.
Gregory moved to the UK in 2004 after completing his studies for a Bachelor Degree in Music Science & Art (University of Macedonia, Greece). A Master’s Degree in Composition & Contemporary Music (University of Huddersfield) followed and Gregory is currently completing his PhD in Composition (Brunel University, London - Christopher Fox, Jennifer Walshe, Richard Barrett).
His work is concerned with the theatricality of music performance, audio scenography and manipulation of space, and the interaction between performers and the audience. His music has been performed in concerts, festivals, workshops and multidisciplinary projects in the UK, Greece, Germany, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania and USA by various performers/ensembles, such as Asamisimasa, London Contemporary Orchestra, Quasars Ensemble, Okeanos Ensemble, Goldberg Ensemble, Sonic Inertia Performance Group, Lorenda Ramou, COMA Yorkshire, and the Hellenic Group of Contemporary Music.
Gregory is the co-founder of Epikyklos (2006), a non-profit organisation for the promotion of contemporary music, and the Metapraxis Ensemble (2009), experimenting on the expansion of musical performance. He is also being involved with Roehampton University’s Community Music Department, as well as working as guest lecturer and music teacher (Roehampton University, DaCapo Foundation & Roehampton Music).
